Šumava is an extensive mountain range on the borders of the Czech Republic, Austria and Bavaria. Its southern side is considerably steeper than the northern, Czech side. The Lipno reservoir lies within the Šumava area. The highest mountain of the range is Velký Javor (Großer Arber). Altitudes stay above 1,000 m almost everywhere, so snow conditions are good for most of the winter.
